Yamunotri: A Sacred Destination in the Char Dham Yatra

Overview

Yamunotri, one of the four sacred shrines in the Char Dham Yatra, is located in the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. • Mythology: According to Hindu mythology, Yamunotri is the place where Sage Asit Muni used to reside. Legends say that the Yamuna is a divine river and the sister of Yama, hence the worship of Yamuna at this place is said to grant liberation from the torments of death.

2. Surya Kund
   • Hot Springs: Surya Kund is a hot water spring near the temple. Pilgrims cook rice and potatoes in the boiling waters of the kund, which are offered as prasad (religious offering) to the deity.
   • Temperature: The water temperature here is around 88 degrees Celsius.
3. Divya Shila
   • Sacred Rock: Pilgrims worship this rock pillar before entering the Yamunotri Temple. It is considered highly auspicious.
4. Yamuna River
   • Ritual Bathing: Pilgrims take a dip in the icy waters of the Yamuna River for purification before offering prayers at the temple.

• Road: The journey to Yamunotri involves traveling by road up to Janki Chatti, which is 6 km from Yamunotri. From Janki Chatti, pilgrims trek 6 km to reach the shrine. Ponies and palanquins are available for those who need assistance.
